The Nia Alliance

GBAPP Programs

About The Greater Bridgeport Area Prevention Program (GBAPP):

GBAPP was created in 1980 as a public/private partnership to address the problem of adolescent pregnancy in the greater Bridgeport area. In 1992, our mission was expanded to include issues related to the prevention and early intervention of HIV/AIDS among youth, women and children.

The mission of GBAPP is to decrease pregnancy and early parenthood in adolescents, and reduce sexually transmitted diseases and HIV/AIDS in children, youth, women and men in the Bridgeport area.

The Nia Alliance currently serves the Greater Bridgeport community and vicinity under the following programs
:

The Sister and Brother Prevention Program
Funded by the State of CT Department of Public Health AIDS Division

SBPP is funded to target females of African descent ages 18-29 and their partners.
This evidence based model uses SISTA “SISTA: Sisters Informing Sisters on Topics about AIDS."

This group-level, gender- and culturally- relevant intervention, is designed to increase condom use with African American women. Five peer-led group sessions are conducted that focus on ethnic and gender pride, HIV knowledge, and skills training around sexual risk reduction behaviors and decision making. The intervention is based on Social Learning theory as well as the theory of Gender and Power.

CTR-Counseling and testing Services are also offered under this funding award. Early knowledge of HIV infection is now recognized as a critical component in controlling the spread of HIV infection. Therefore, HIV counseling, testing, and referral (CTR) is a critical part of any successful HIV prevention program.

Staffing: Six members of the Nia Alliance serve as subcontractors on this program. The full-time health educator was hired from the second cohort of the alliance.
